Shape Up with the Slow Fat Triathlete Book Giveaway!
1 02 2009
This week’s giveaway is yet another book, Shape Up With the Slow Fat Triathlete, by Jayne Williams.
I though this book was going to be full of drills and programs and plans to take yourself from overweight to triathlete in a few months, but it wasn’t like that. It actually wasn’t about triathalons or running at all.
This book was more of a “do wahtever you enjoy and gets you moving, no matter how good you are or how you look.” Want to run a marathon? Start slow. Ran it and got last place? Good for you! You finished.
This book covers seeing fitness as what you do, not how you look, finding your inner jock, seperating weight loss from movement (which I think we all need a little help with) and being your own superhero. It’s an easy read with motivational, down-to-earth advice, that you can use wether your preferred method of exercise is running or pickleball with your kids, with funny real life stories from other slow, fat athletes.
Jayne Williams, author of The Slow Fat Triathlete, is a self described mediocre yet enthusiatic athlete, that has struggled with her weight and self consciousness most of her life. She brings her personal stories and motivation to this wonderful book, while providing practical, accurate fitness and nutritional advice.
To win your copy of Shape Up with the Slow Fat Trialthele, you can do one (or all for extra entries) of the following:
Giveaway ends Friday February 6th. Good luck!

Love to take long walks with the family!
I love to figure skate. It’s hard to do it when I’m at school in Arizona (no car and the rinks bad/far away), but when I’m home in Michigan I skate a ton. I also love taking walks and hikes with my family.
You’re already in my google reader
Hello! I enjoy taking power walks in our park! Thanks for the chance to win this book. Cindi
Walking! You can do it anyplace anytime!
Play with my son. I am also a teacher so as a reward I will play football or basket ball with my students at recess every other day!!

Hi Kelly,
Biking! I’m looking forward to this snow disappearing – and warmer temps – so I can get the bike back out of storage. (does that make me a fair weather cyclist?)
Hiking or dancing! Although for me, the dancing comes after a few cocktails, so the health benefits are probably cancelled out.
Taking my dog to the dog park or on a walk. Oh, and shopping, of course.
love the take home message
it’s so true! nature, it’s gets me out, exploring one step at a time!!
walking&yoga!
you’re on my blog roll
and i’m going to comment anyways
and i want that book!
i have a few favorite ways not to go gym but my newest favorite is helping my boyfriend carry wood/fix things and do maintenancey around his property….basically being outdoors and spending time together
In the winter snowboarding is wonderful!
I’ve actually just started going on walks for exercise. I started off with a 30 min walk today and hope to go further everyday.
I love to SKI! So fun, and a great workout! In fact, I just got back and my body is a little stiff! I will link back to the contest and add you to the blogroll today!
These little contests are so fun! Thanks!

Shopping
I danced for 15 years before I came to college. Now, whenever my roomate is out, I crank up some good music (that’s not my name by the ting tings anyone?) and just dance.
I love biking to the bay at the end of my road. So relaxing!
tennis or raquetball. So fun and I dont feel like I am working out…until the next day when I feel so sore!
I make it a point never to just lie around when I watch TV. If I’m going to do something like watch crappy reality TV, I make sure that I get some good out of it, by either lifting light weights, or jogging in place, or doing jumping jacks, etc.
I like walking the mall or getting to school early to get a walk around campus before class starts.
I lift weights (power clean, deadlift- yeah i go hard core)/ circuit train cross fit-ish. I also stationary bike and walk a lot. pushups, squats, lunges- all body weight stuff during commercials. i try to park far away from places and walk more. i take the stairs all the time (except when i had a knee injury)
a) You are already on my blogroll. Duh.
b) Although I love to run, my other favorite is definitely dancing. I danced for 13 years so I still like to shake it from time to time, haha.
I love to ski!!
Getting the house in tip top shape gets me moving.
You are on my blogroll.
Definitely walking! I call it exercise in disguise
Sign me up please
taking the doggy out!
and you’re on my blog roll
I love to dance. Thanks for the giveaway.
i need a new book!!!! i think whoever wins the books you are giving away should post a review of them
my favorite non-running (which is my favorite
) way to get moving is to go climb a mountain. living in Missouri, I don’t get to do this often but oh do I love hiking and climbing on vacations!!
and i’m adding you to my blog roll!
My favorite non gym way to get moving is to take the stairs instead of elevator/escalator!
Also, in NY, Governor Patterson wants to tax gym memberships — way to up the obesity rate, huh? Especially in this economy where people can barely afford the gym anyway. My gym sent this out: Governor Patterson wants to tax gym memberships http://hosted.vresp.com/214712/4a01168a03/11002086/5c3f810611/
I will blog about it at some point but wanted to show you!
We just bought a house and I can’t believe the work out I am getting from home renovations! Laying and grouting tile, peeling off old wall paper and painting walls is hard, physical work and I ache afterward like I’ve just done ten areobics classes.
I love to rollerblade as an alternative to the gym! I can’t wait till it gets warm out!
Yoga!! Kundalini yoga with lots of breathwork.
my favorite non-running way of getting moving is going to group classes at the gym. A few of my friends have shown interest in joining the gym and have been my guest at a few classes. Working out with them has been great motivation and keeps me on track.
Okay, I have a little different approach to getting moving. I can do my workouts whenever, but only because I know I need to. However, come the weekend I just want to veg. Instead of wasting the weekend away I put on my Nikes and grab the cleaning supplies. Yesterday I spent hours cleaning my house and feel better – 1 because my house is all nice and sparkly and 2 because I know I burned some calories in the process. Afterward since I was already “warmed up” I went and did a nice sweaty workout. Works every time.
We live out in the country so I like to take my boys on a walk down the country roads. I also enjoy turning the satellite radio on spanish music (salsa, cumbias, etc) and dance while I’m cleaning.
I like to walk the dog, ride my bike, or workin the yard/around the house. And you’re already on the blogroll.
My favorite “get moving” activities are taking the pup for a walk (gets us BOTH moving) and mowing the lawn with a push mower.
Hiking. Outdoor Rock Climbing Wall. Swiming at the lake.
Shopping’s MY Cardio! Or Walking My Dog.
I want this book!
Lets see..my fav non running or gym way to get moving would def. be hiking in the Sierra Nevadas!
Living in NYC I walk everywhere I can! That’s a great way to get my heart pumping but also Bikram Yoga is an easy go to for me. I love how I feel afterwards and it’s surprising how one pose can make you sweat and your heartbeat race so fast!
Dancing with the husband! And hiking!

This is kind of goofy but I live in a two story townhouse and in 15 years I have never used the downstairs bathroom. I always make myself walk up to the 2nd floor! Also, my office at work is on the 5th floor and I always walk down the stairs to the first floor restroom.
Definitely hiking!
I love taking my dog for long walks, but in the wintertime, that goes by the way side. Can’t wait for all the snow to melt!
Happy Monday!
Hockey. I love to play hockey. But alas, I have had to hang my skates up and plant my butt on the treadmill instead. The rink is too far away and budget just isn’t allowing for it. *sigh* Breaks my heart it does. Hockey was easy in da UP of Michigan. Western South Dakota? Not so much.
So now I’m a hiker. If I can’t get out into the woods for a hike, at the very least I hit the awesome rail-to-trail that is right out my back door. And I dance. Adult jazz/hip-hop and tappity-tap-tap. So.Much.Fun.
This book looks awesome – she sounds just like me.
Oh – and you’re on my reader. *loves*
I love to walk/run through my neighborhood at home and/or on the treadmill. I want that book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks for the give-away. You’re the bestest.
my 4 mile walks in the country are very special to me……….my time for me
I love going on walks, going ice skating, browsing in the local mall, visiting amusement parks, all of those activities that don’t even feel like work but get your heart pumping anyways.
wow, book sounds interesting. My favorite non-working out workout? hmm…I actually like “gym” time etc. But I guess I’d say going for a hike. (living in the flattest place in the world means that’s usually a treat)
It’s kinda sad that it’s so hard for me to think of my favorite non-gym, non-running way to get moving. I’ll remember once the weather gets nicer that I actually like things like hiking, going for walks, bike rides, and the like. Cool sounding book!
I don’t know if this counts as a workout, but I like giving my home a thorough cleaning. It usually works up a pretty good sweat, and I feel so accomplished when I’m done.
Best non-”real” exercise… errands! All the walking, odd movements, the inevitable cleaning/straightening once you get home… it’s tiring!
I love to take BodyCombat or go for a hike in the woods behind my house, if I am not running!!
Just stopping by to say Happy Monday … hope it’s been swell.
My favorite non-running way to get moving is to go rock climbing! Its fun, challenging, I’m always super sore afterwards even though I don’t feel like I’m getting a workout!
Oooh I like the sounds of this book. I love walking, and ice skating is lots of fun too. And dancing!
(you’re already on my blog roll:)).

I like walking around my neighborhood, even if it’s just to run errands. There are so many pretty trees here and every season the area can look completely different.
This book sounds so interesting. I think your point about separating weight loss from movement is dead on.
Kayaking! Hiking! Being outside! Love getting out in nature!
I like to do pushups in the morning and in between pushups I push my arms up in the air. Also I like to get out and hike.
tennis is my favorite way to get moving! I love it
I’m working on my hubby to buy me a power-kite for my birthday! I believe that gives you an awesome full-body workout! For now I walk outside – 4 x 5 km per week.
I’ve put a link to this post in my latest blogpost and am already subscribed to your blog!
Just yesterday I met with grad school professor who I keep in touch with and we talked about the whole fit versus fat debate. He seems quite convinced, especially in light of some recent data, that you absolutely can be fit/run marathons/etc. with extra weight on your body. He is deemed of my public health school so I tend to believe him
I like to walk up and down my 3 flights of stairs with about 30 lbs of groceries in my hands…boy…that definately gets the heart rate up! I keep telling myself I’m going to put on my hrm when I grocery shop so when I walk up my stairs I’ll be able to see actually how much the heart rate goes up!
I love to ride my bike outdoors. Living in Southeast Texas means you can pretty much ride your bike year round. Biking is easy on the knees and the wind helps keep you cool.
Love your blog and would love the book, I’m sure. I’ll be adding you to my blogroll.
Just wanted to say how much I love the title of this book!
I love to rollerblade and take walks with my dog!
Ooooh, I love running around with my dog Boo, but I guess that’s not exactly non running huh? So, in that case, I like to rollerblade, play sand volleyball and swim. Unfortunately it’s TOO COLD right now, and I get confused and seem to think that I move around just as much when I stay snuggled under my blanket on the couch watching TV. No? that doesn’t count? Shucks.
But I would LOVE to get this book! A friend of mine is reading it and it convinced her to sign up for a triathlon, and well, somehow she got me to commit to it as well, but I think I need to read that book, because my motivation is lagging a bit and I need to read what she did to see what has got her all excited for it.
Thanks!!!
(you are already on my blogroll, yay!)

Favorite non-running, get-moving activity? Dance! Whether it’s a ballet class, impromptu salsa party at the latin restaurant next to work or an all-out 80s dance party, I love to dance and it keeps me motivated!
