Monday Madness

2 03 2009

This weekend was nuts- really busy, but in a good way. I think things should calm down after today, but that may be wishful thinking.

The Boy’s First Workout

Well, gym workout, I should say. We went Saturday night. It was out “date night” which pretty much just means we decide we aren’t going to go out and do anything with anyone else. We headed to the gym around 8:00pm, and warmed up on the treadmill. We were originally only going to do 20 minutes, but Jerome wanted to go longer, so we ended up doing around 30. We raced the whole time-and I beat him to the mile marker (sucker). He stayed on a little bit longer to finish up a lap (the treadmill has a little screen with a picture of a track so you can see how many laps you’ve done. So basically, he pushed me to do more cardio, which is what I need.

After that we stretched, and started with the strength training.

For the most part, I had him to one exercise, then I would do a set while he rested and then we would repeat, then move onto a nother exercise.

From what I remember, we did:

  • Bosu pushups
  • Bicep curls
  • Tricep pulldowns on the cable machine
  • Bench press (I didn’t do these, but I spotted him)
  • Cable machine rows
  • crunches with 25 pound weight plate
  • regular crunches on the mat
  • I think that’s it. I did some weighted squats and calf raises, but we stuck to upper body and abs with Jerome.

He reported being sore, but not too bad, which is good. He said he wasn’t used to that jell-o armed feeling we all love so much, but didn’t hate it, so it was a success.

I LOVE working out with someone else. It’s more fun, and relaxing than just pounding through everything and leaving.

We are headed back to the gym tonight, which I think is going to interfere with watching The Bachelor season finale, so we will probably have to watch it online afterwards (so don’t ruin it for me:) )

    Food

I’ve been eating like crap for the past week. Seriously. Too much food, and too much bad food. So this week I’m going to do my own version of Crap-free Week, which to me just means, don’t eat crap. I’m not good at rules or restricted foods, so I’m not setting any parmeters- I just need to cut out the junk for a while. I had that toxic bleeeeehhhh feeling.

    Giveaway Alert

Those of you that normally get an email alert from me every Sunday about the weekly giveaway may have noticed it missing. I’ve got a lot of writing projects coming due pretty soon, which means I need to do a lot of emailing back and forth with my contracts to pan some stuff out. When I send out the email alert, it maxes out how many emails I can send in 24 hours, and I can’t send any until the 24 hours is up. So this week I didn’t send the alert to keep my email free. The giveaway is up, obviously, so go ahead and enter.

If you want to be added to giveaway email alert list, email me at kelly@everygymsnightmare.com with Giveaway Alert in the subject, and I’ll add ya.

and about the size thing: The things I giveaway are products companies donate. The Danskin items are the items I am sent to review, so I don’t really have any control over the sizing of them- sorry!

Tons of work to do! Back with more later! Hope everyone had a fantastic weekend!

It’s nice to know that you’ve been eating like crap too! I have that damn bridal fashion show this Saturday and feel as though I have gained 10 pounds. I know I haven’t-but I HATE feeling like it. Got any look trim and tight secrets or a list of what I should avoid the next 6 days?

Mara- if you live near me!

Tabitha- nope! I don’t like restricting certain foods. well, besides processed carbs, but you are supposed to stay away from those anyway (which is easier said than done…)

SO great that you two can push each other at the gym. That’s exactly what a great workout buddy does!
Hope everything settles down a little for you soon!

I really wish I could hire you as well! Sounds like you and Jerome are having fun working out together which is great! My bf and I work out together a lot but I’d love him to teach me some things he knows that I don’t!

    I’m on day 2 of my crap-free week….we’ll see if I last. :-)

SO excited for the Bachelor finale tonight. I won’t spoil it, but I will say that supposedly what has happened since the finale is pretty darn juicy…

I am with you on the crap week and toxic food … a hard cycle to break with my husband around! Glad you got yours to the gym!

I like having someone to work out with occassionally, but really it’s my time

OK I am soooo jealous that your boy went to the gym with you. I have tried and tried and TRIED this past year to get my bf to workout…I even signed him up for a 5k last year which ended horribly (my dad walked it and beat him…it was a sad day). Is your guy just interested in getting in shape, or do you have to motivate him? Any tips to motivate my guy to workout, even a little?? (He’s a big dude and hates to run!)

It’s wonderful you do the give-aways, don’t worry about the size! Trying to get husband to the gym. This was some inspiration.

    tfh (10:58:32) :

Any reason you didn’t bench press?

For some reason I’m really liking the image of my husband spotting me as I bench press 200 lbs. Too bad in real life it would be closer to 60…

    BEE (11:48:56) :

Glad to hear the bf loved it!

I hear ya- I work out so much better when I have someone with me, and I have a little bit of a sadist tendency when working out with my boy, somehow I love to see him suffer 30% and kick ass 70%!!!

    alessa (12:16:25) :

i wish i had you around to force me to do strength training. i have no motivation to do it at all! agh.

    dawn (13:27:12) :

you know what I love? I love having someone help me stretch! you have no idea how having someone to stretch my legs and back help. I rarely get that and sometimes have to wait for hubby to come home from work to stretch me, but ohhh does it feel good.

    2 03 2009
    Eliza (13:32:51) :

aw thats so cute that you and Jerome are working out together. I agree–its much more fun to have a gym buddy! have fun!

    2 03 2009
    Kelly (13:49:38) :

ttfn300- i know, no worries, just making sure everyone knows! and I hear ya- how about we add “just because its in front of you doesnt mean you need to eat it” to the list, too?

Holly- they do the “after the final rose” thing tonight, too, right? i hope so. im such a sucker for that show

amy s- oh man, i dont know how long youve been reading, but ive been trying forever to get him to work out with me and he always refused. he quit smoking recently, and i tossed it out one more time about how it would help him breathe better and get healthy and he finally agreed. i think it has to come from the inside, you cant force anyone to do anything. maybe your boy will come around, too.

tfh- oh i forgot to mention that. since my roator cuff has been all messed up, my shoulder is in shreds and i didnt want to push it. my pecs are too tight anyway (part of the rotator cuff problem) and Id rather just do chest presses with dumbbells instead anyway- im not concerned with how much weight i can bench. not a goal of mine, i never bench.

alessa- you have to! you need strong bones!

dawn- yeah jerome had me help him with some stretches for his shins. i was barely strong enoughto hold his feet in place though, lol

That’s my idea of a date night, but definitely not my boyfriend’s. ;)

    Hope your hand is better!

    Jerome D (15:07:23) :

Just to be clear. I didn’t love the gym. I’m just doing it to get it done. I be complaining in my head. Totally almost threw up too. One time I rode my bike a good ways then threw up. I was on a BMX bike too, so you know only 1 gear. Seattle is really hilly too. All up hills no down hills ever. In the snow too…. bare foot…. okay not so much the snow or bare foot. but i did throw up from riding my bike.

I need a partner to stay motivated. Running out of ideas for my body sculpting classes I teach. Any suggestions? I think I have done just about everything.

    Kelly (15:24:12) :

Jerry Thunder- you loved it, you know you did. Well, I loved working out with you atleast. and I totally remember when you threw up from riding the bike- i think its my favorite memory

kristisummer- i dont really know what a body sculpting class entails, so im afraid im not much help! anyone else have any ideas?

Love it! Will you continue to be posting these routines? I really hope so. Then I can steal them to use for my sister :D

That’s awesome that he wanted to go for longer than you had agreed upon, too. Go boy!

Crap-free week sounds good- your version of it. It makes the most sense. I’ve been eating too much lately too. Sighs.

Always fun working out with your SO. I’m really enjoying getting back into being fit with my wife. Workouts together are always interesting since we both bring new exercises back home fore each otehr to try.

We’re reading New Rules of Lifting for Women for her. Good stuff in that there book. :)

The book is sitting on my nightstand right now, but here are the first couple of rules from the excerpt on the new rules website:

(And yes, essentially it’s Eat enough, Don’t be afraid of heavy weights)

I recall seeing 19 rules total

    1. The purpose of lifting weights is to build muscle
Admonitions against the use of toning, shaping (muscle shape is genetically predetermined), sculpting
    2. Muscle is hard to build
It’s very hard to add muscle mass, you’re not going to look like a Mrs. Olympia contestant without amazing genetics and ‘assistance’
    3. Results come from hard work
    4. Hard work includes lifting heavier weights
    6. No workout will make you taller
    – You can’t get ‘longer’ muscles working out. Muscle shape is genetically predetermined

A number of the other rules cover not cutting calories back too far. I can post the rest of them tonight if you’re interested.

I really like the book, my wife likes the book, and I suspect that once she finishes her set of sessions with Fitness Together ( :) ) that she’ll start working the routines in the book.
