Love and Hate for The Biggest Loser
16 09 2009
Im sure most of you watched the season premier of The Biggest Loser last night. I was prepared to sit down and right my likes and dislikes of the show, but the negative column soon out weighed (ha, joke) the positive, so let me quickly say what I liked.
LIKES:
OMG Jillian has the most fantastic arms I have ever seen. Probably from these. I dont want to risk growing testicles, so I think Ill settle for what my weights can give me.
That woman (forgive me, Im horrible with names) who lost her whole family in a car crash is the most inspirational person I have ever met. Anything any one has ever been through doesnt even come close to her tragedy- yet she is so sparkly, and sweet and motivational tidbits just spill out of her mouth every time she opens it. She seems like one of those people that you always want to be around because she sees the world differently than you ever could and learn from her everytime she’s around.
Coach Mo- I just want to pinch his cheeks.
Ok, that’s all. Seriously.
DISLIKES:
That first race? Where Tracy (think thats her name) collapsed about 100 yards before the finish line, and everyone rallied around her to help her cross it? She didn’t need to cross the finish line SHE NEEDED TO GO TO THE HOSPITAL. Who the hell was that medic that let that happen?? Her eyes were rolling back in her head, and she missed the first week because she was still in the hospital. I think the contestants got caught in being the supportive team for the cameras and almost killed this woman. Jesus Christ.
When Dan got out of the car to reveal himself, and everyone gasped and started screaming was such a crock. Do you really think those people immediately knew who he was? They are starting the most exciting journey of their lives on TV, about to start their race, hoping its Bob and Jillian that are getting out of the car, and some guy in a orange shirt comes out and they start screaming? No way. you know someone had to tell them who it was and then edit the time in between out.
Bob and Jillian, period. First, is it just me or do they get more ridiculously fashionable each season? Did you see them the first scene- it looked like they were dipped in leather. And what is with all the screaming and swearing?? The swearing especially. F-bombs constantly and completely unnecessary. Really had to step up your game to keep the ratings, huh guys?
I love the family-less woman (that sounded horrible- still not sure of her name) and when she weighed in, she went on an AWESOME speech about being your best and not letting things define you. Then fucking Jillian comes in and steals her thunder with a ton of “me, me me’s”. No body cares about you, Jillian, you are just there to make sure everyone sweats. Totally stole her thunder. it was worse than Kanye at the VMAs.
Yet, despite all my dislikes, I still watch the show every season, and still gripe about how it is 2 hours when really can be 30 minutes tops, and the infuriating way they cut to commercial each time. I like to see people work hard, lose weight and be happy. And I like to complain.

Having seen Jillian’s arms in person — they are hypnotizing! So much more definition and OMFG’edness than on tv.
I read her tweet saying her pills are vitamin c, guarnica and something else that she has always recommended. Still. It feels dirty, doesn’t it?
I noticed they added even more equipment to the gym this year- sleds and kettlebells (about time?) and that weird stair crawling thing. I’m sure there’s more.
I watch the show frequently- but the drama and infuriating commercial cuts always leave a bad taste in my mouth. Still, I joined a gym and got a trainer because of the 24 Hour Fitness Biggest Loser specials when the show began. Doing so has changed my life. For that, I will always be thankful.
I feel the same way. I watch it every season, all the while bitching enarly nonstop about it.
I think the woman’s name is Abby, I broke into tears when she was telling her story. I admit I DVR TBL so I can mostly skip to the weigh-in’s and results. I couldn’t sit through two hours every week, way too many commercials and WAY too much product placement (chewing gum to forget being hungry? WTF, that makes me MORE hungry).
I totally agree with your likes/dislikes. Last night was honestly the first time I have EVER sat down to watch an episode of the show. EVER. I just never like the thought of how unrealistic it makes weight loss seem (and by that I mean, it makes people think they should be able to lose 10+lbs a week and 1-2lbs is nothing). BUT – I am going to watch this season.
I totally agree about Abby, the lady who lost her family. She was SO inspirational. All day I kept thinking about after her weigh in when she said, “death doesn’t scare me – being here, that is scary” and then when she talked about how she is CHOOSING to be there. She made me cry.
And yes, one of the first things I said about Jillian last night was – how and why is she so g-d d-mn mean to these people?! I understand you can’t just baby people and sometimes people need tough love to make them push, but DAMN. She was a b*tch. I don’t think I could ever be that mean as a trainer. And the f-bombs we unnecessary.
I like TBL. I don’t really have time to watch it…but I am MAKING time this year because I think, while totally unrealistic, it’s inspiring. But 100% I have to watch it DVR’d so I can fast forward through the stupid product promos, the zillions of commercials, and time-wasting at the weigh-ins and elimination ceremony.
you know what I hate? why most The Biggest Loser allow Alison to say “you are the heaviest biggest loser we’ve ever had”?
Why is this neccesary? A fat person does NOT need to hear those words, they need motivation and encouragement.
Man that pisses me off to no end….these are humans not items to promote with.
I love your comments on TBL! I actually got so mad the last two seasons that I gave it up, the show is just ridiculous now. I don’t want to risk growing testicles either, hahaha.
Great post!
jillian should def not talk so much. she gets too involved in her ideas of what is wrong with the contestents and trying to be emotional etc. it looks forced, whether or not it’s real.
time for these peeps to lose some weight! i don’t care about the games or bullshit, i fast forward through all the talk scenes pre-voting, it’s annoying.
I have my dislikes of the show, too (like the safety of it all) but I still am so incredibly intrigued. I wish they would focus more on people AFTER the show ends – because isn’t that when the hard part begins? When you have to work 8 hours/day instead of work OUT 8 hours/day? Oh well. Like you, I complain some…yet I tune in.
And, oh MY – Abby had me in tears within the first 20 minutes. I just want to be her friend….she seems like SUCH an amazing person.
Watching Abby…. yeah I totally lost it! Amazing inspiration!! I can understand the points you made…. but I still love the show and will watch it every season! I was REALLT surprised they had to run, uphill the MOMENT they started the show! No wonder they had two people go to the hospital….. yikes!

ha ha…i liked your review. It was funny. I like to complain sometimes too! Thanks for filling me in. Now I don’t have to watch the entire two hours. ha ha!!
Great post! I totally agree with you! The testicles comment make me laugh!
amen!
I think I’ve only seen this show once, ages ago. I like Jillian’s 30 day shred but am so NOT impressed by the new supplement line, and I don’t think that the show is a very good role model for a lot of people, either.
But there are flaws in all forms of media!
agreed that jillian is almost too over the top this year. I over all really like the show and find it to always motivate me, i just love working out while I watch it!!
