Q and A: Just Not a Runner?

28 09 2009

www.toothpastefordinner.com
www.toothpastefordinner.com

I am in quite good shape; I had a fit test that put me in the top 6% in terms my cardio health (not really sure what this means or if it is helpful, just reiterating what the trainer told me after a bunch of tests). My BMI is normal, I’ve worked out consistently (more like, religiously) for nearly 7 years (5-6x week). I could go on, but the point is, I consider myself to be in quite good shape, especially for a woman.

That said, I cannot run. I used to try to run on the treadmill, but my heart rate would get to 175++ after only a few minutes of 6ish MPH. This is with a Polar HR monitor w/ chest strap. And I’m 22. Oh, and my knees would hurt. Even after the $150 Brooks shoes. And seeing a doctor. And personal trainer.

Of course I *want* to run, so I learned about the Pose method of running and have been training accordingly for the past 6 months. And no knee pain, knock on wood. I’ve combined Pose with the Galloway and run 5/run:1/walk at about 5MPH top running speed (cease yo’ laughing!). This is the only way I can keep my heart rate from going over 170 (and by that I mean I keep it at 169-172). It’s annoying because I don’t feel that tired, but I am trying to stay in my ‘zone’. I’m also not at all ambitious, we’re talking 1-1.75 miles total, about 2-3 times a week.

What I’d like to know is why my heart rate leaps when I run, when I am in good cardio shape (resting HR is around 52). I can do very difficult Spins (I am even a certified Spin instructor) and my HR rarely gets above 165, and you know how intense Spinning can be! So what’s the deal?

Also; is the Pose method worth it? It doesn’t exactly feel natural, but it’s not totally unnatural either. I feel like anything to avoid injury is worth it, but I’ve also heard that Pose runners really stress out their calves and can’t be good distance runners.

Much appreciation,

Jennifer

This one has a ton of different levels, and while I’m not going to be able to tell you with certainty, I can toss out a few ideas.

RE: Heart rate. If you are healthy, as you say you are, you dont have to live and die by your heart rate- especially if you are focusing on the higher end. The max heart rate is mainly to keep old people from exploding, and then the minimum is to make sure you are working out hard enough to get benefits. A lot of people claim (and ive seen it) to have worked out at their very max (100% of their maximum heart rate- which 220- your age) and still be able to hold a conversation. That “zone” you talk about is one of those things that doesnt work for everyone so dont bother trying to stay in a specific range for certain gains- its all theory and generic. Obviously, not everyone of a certain age should be working out at the same heart rate, because everyone weighs different amounts, and is cardiovascularly in different places. One reason for the spike, however, is that you are running too fast- which 6 MPH might be for you. Thats a big mistake beginning runners make- thinking they have to run fast right off the bat. Try running more at a trot pace, perhaps 4.7-5 and see if that helps any.

RE running vs spinning: these are completely different modes of cardio, so dont compare performace in one area to the other. Spinning is more explosive, and really, 5-10 beats per minute isnt a huge difference in terms of how hard your body is working. Running is the hardest form of cardio in all physical areas, so running is probably your threshold- spinning, not so hard for you, but running jacks it up a notch you arent equipt for yet. What makes someone more a good endurance athlete is their amount of slow twitch muscle fibers, which are built for endurance activities (fast twitch are for explosive movements.) unfortunately, you cant change the amount of fibers you are have, which is why i insist I am made of all fast twitch fibers- I cant do endurance activities either.

Bottom line- running just might not be your thing- especially if it bugs your knees. If you keep forcing it, you might blow them out so stick to non weight baring or low impact, like walking, spinning, biking, swimming or the elliptical.

as for the POSE technique, for those of you that dont know what it is, its specific running form to stick to that supposedly makes you more efficient and eliminates pain. Its one of those things that if it works for you, cool, but its not going to work for everyone. If you think about it, its just form, and everyone runs with different form. Its not gunna kill you, but its not a miracle worker- and its not one size fits all. some people hate it and some people love it, but its safe, so go ahead, fear-free.

When it really comes down to it, running is probably the hardest form of cardio that there is. Its hard on the joints, hard on the lungs and hard on them muscles. If you don’t enjoy it, or if it injures you, don’t do it. Don’t feel like to be a true athlete or to truly be fit you should be a runner. Some people are naturals, and some will never quite get the hang of it. Find something that you love, and do it, and dont focus so much on the numbers.

Q and A: Gaining Muscle Weight

25 09 2009

www.nataliedee.com
www.nataliedee.com

Kelly,
I’m trying to gain weight after cutting down too far. I’m 5′4″ and around 110 pounds. I’m not clinically underweight, but my shoulders and back are way too bony. I’d like to gain around 5-10 pounds, but I’d want it to be muscle, not fat.
So, a few interrelated questions: How much should I eat so that I can get hypertrophy but not just be packing on weight? What is a good rate of increase (where I know that the gain is healthy)? How much does food quality count? I eat clean most of the time, but since I have a liiittle extra room right now, would eating a few extra Newman O’s derail my muscle goals? How hard do I need to be working out to grow muscle? I lift weights 3x a week, but should I leave the gym wanting to collapse, or just be fatigued? What do you recommend for cardio? I walk around my campus all day and jog to the gym and back (it’s a about a 1/4 mile each way), but other than that I’m not doing much…bad, I know. Do you find adding some cardio helps healthy gains, as long as it’s not creating a deficit?
Thank you!- Mimi

What refreshing question. Isnt it a shame that most of you probably have no idea what the answer to these questions are? Its because every fitness outlet assumes everyone wants to lose weight, which drives me nuts.

Im going to take this question by question so I dont miss anything.

How much should I eat so that I can get hypertrophy but not just be packing on weight?

First off: wow on using the word hypertrophy. You are going to need to eat a little bit more, but its just because you are going to have to work out HARD to gain muscle mass. Eat to support your activity level, which you can figure out here.

What is a good rate of increase (where I know that the gain is healthy)?

Its all going to depend on how hard you go at it. To make sure you are gaining weight, but that it is muscle, you are going to have to keep track of your weight and your body fat. Your body fat should stay the same as your weight goes up. Gaining muscle isnt dangerous to your health like losing weight can be, so there isnt a safe, or healthy time frame. You arent going to gain muscle too fast- its hard to do.

How much does food quality count? I eat clean most of the time, but since I have a liiittle extra room right now, would eating a few extra Newman O’s derail my muscle goals?

This is the fun part. The quality of the food you are consuming is important, but extras aren’t. What I mean is, you have to make sure you are eating all your needs: protein, carbs, veggies and fruits, low fat dairy and healthy fats. Since youare shredding your muscles you are going to need to factor that in when you think about protein- probably about 1 gram per kg of body weight, as opposed to the .8 the average exerciser needs. Beyond that, as long as you aren’t eating too many calories, you can indulge every once in a while. Its different from trying to lose weight, where you have to cut out all the extra crap, but if you hit all your food groups, and still need some calories, eat a cookie. Thats my philosophy on eating in general, though.

How hard do I need to be working out to grow muscle? I lift weights 3x a week, but should I leave the gym wanting to collapse, or just be fatigued?

ok here’s the nitty gritty stuff: heavy weights, lower reps. everyone gains muscle at a different rate, so I cant give you concrete numbers on weight and frequency, but when you are trying to gain muscle mass, you are going to have to lift harder. Instead of the 12-15 reps most people lift with, you are going to have to find a weight that maxes you at 6-8 reps, and actually maxes you to the point of failure (you literally cannot do another rep with good form.) Feeling like you want to collapse depends on your threshold, but in the beginning you are probably going to feel that way. You are probably going to find yourself moving through your routine a lot slower too because you are going to need time to recover between each set. I would recommend working each muscle group every other day, which means full body every other day or split workouts (upper and lower, or however you split them) every day. Thinks how hard body builders have to work out and how often: thats what you want to train like, you are just in the baby stages of it. When you lift for gains, you are going to be lifting heavy weights, so dont combine exercises (like lunges with bicep curls) because to have heavy enough weights to max your arms at 6-8 reps, you are going to need to hold a steady base (feet shoulder width apart, knees bent, or sitting on a bench) to protect yourself. I cant stress that enough- do only isolation exercises- or else you are going to injure yourself

I walk around my campus all day and jog to the gym and back (it’s a about a 1/4 mile each way), but other than that I’m not doing much…bad, I know. Do you find adding some cardio helps healthy gains, as long as it’s not creating a deficit?

Cardio is what is going to keep the fat weight off. Lifting to max yourself isn’t going to get the heart rate up (its till burns calories because the heavier you lift the harder your body works, and it needs more calories to repair itself, which is factored into the equation i linked to) or atleast, not for very long, so cardio will keep you lean, and plus, you still need all the cardio benefits. Luckily, since weight loss isnt an issue, you dont have to do very much- just the baseline for health: 30 minutes of moderate intensity most days of the week (4-6). Everyone needs to do this amount of cardio, just to keep yourself healthy. If it ends up creating a deficit, you need to eat more to counter act it.

Basically, to gain weight with muscle you have to lift heavy weights often, eat more because you are increasing the intensity of your workouts, be sure to get enough protein to repair your muscles, and keep doing cardio, but don’t create a deficit.

Im pretty sure there are going to be some follow up questions for this, so Mimi, and everyone, feel free to ask.

What’s With the Hate?

24 09 2009

Holy crap. Why is everyone on the internet so angry? You would not believe the comments we have to put up with as bloggers and writers online (well, unless you experience it as well.) Or if you are one of the people that does it.

I refuse to put up with them anymore and I’m starting with this one.

I LOVE when people disagree with me, but accusing me of having sex with animals is probably a liiiiiittle out of line. For a product review!

Most bloggers keep quiet, which is probably the best policy, but I’ve never been good at that.

Attention Vegans and Vegetarians and Just Plain Opinionated Folk

That cartoon makes me seem biased, but I’m really not, it just made me laugh. You’ll see why that clarification is important in a sec.

So, I decided fittingbackin wins the name my column contest, maybe because it was closest to my original idea, but definately because it conveys I am a trainer with a rant to go on. What do you win? Nothing. Sorry about that. But look! A link to your site!

So this is another one where you guys can get in on the action. I’m working on an article for Twirlit.com about vegans and vegetarians and whether or not “fad” or “experimental” or “I really just want a way to justify eating nothing but fruits and veggies to lose weight” vegans and vegetarians cheapen the vegan and vegetarian lifestyle.

SO, I want to hear from you if:

1) you are a true vegan and vegetarian living the lifestyle for moral purposes (oppose the treatment of animals, health purposes, such as allergies, or intolerances, or if you truely just believe it is better for your health and body, or if there is another reason I am missing). I prefer if you have been eating as such for over 2 years, but am open. Also, any info you can give to enlighten everyone on why choose to live this way and how you feel when other people dapple in it

2) If you have experiemented with either veganism or vegetarianism for a predetermined amount of time, (”I’m going to try out veganism for 2 weeks”) have used it as a means to lose weight, because you were curious to see if you could do it- like a personal challenge, or just wanted to try it for anyother reason but didn’t stick to it.

3) All others who have/have not tried it, and what you think about people that experiment with diets (diest in the literal term). Do you think it lessens the vegan and vegetarian diet as a whole, when people try it without moral cause?

I may use quotes in the peice like I did with the Jillian article, so the more thoughtful the better.

Help! Name my Column!

22 09 2009

My Stupid Fitness Gadget rants at Twirlit.com have been upgraded to a weekly column, where I get to rant about all stupid fitness things (not that I don’t already.) But I need a name for it.

I need it to 1) say that I am a personal trainer and 2) say that its going to be a rant about some stupid fitness fad.

I was thinking “Personal Trainer’s Fitness Fit of the Week” But Im not sure.

Do you like that one, or have a better idea?

Q and A: Stubborn Fat

21 09 2009

I have question about my girlfriend. She has been having problems losing some stubborn fat around her belly, thighs and butt. She weighs around 154Lbs and stands around 5′9”.

We both go the gym around 5 days a week and work hard. When i say we work hard, we do. I know some people say that thinking they do but really they don’t. We sometimes work out with our personal trainer and he has said many times that she works harder than any of his other clients and she is as strong as some of the other female personal trainers.

Since starting the gym i have noticed some pretty big changes with my body but her body just seems to be stubborn and doesn’t want to lose those extra pounds. At the gym we usually do a fairly intense weight workout then she does cardio for 45 mins. She also does body pump most weeks too.
Our diets are usually very good as our personal trainer is also a dietician so he has tried many different approaches but he too is baffled at how her body has barely changed over the last 3 years considering all the hard work she has put in.

Do you have any ideas? Anything she can try? I saw on another blog of yours that some people tried even increasing the daily calorie intake which actually worked in losing weight. At this stage she would not be eating anywhere near 2000 calories per day i wouldn’t think.
If you could get back to me it would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Nathan

I trust your workouts are intense, so given that there can be a number of things going on-

FOOD: You are right in that some people lose weight when they increase their intake. People often think they have to eat around 1600 calories to lose weight, but thats because its an average number most TV shows and magazines tell us- but think how differently we all workout/eat/are shaped and we all have different metabolisms, and for most people this is too low. If you eat too few calories, your body won’t let you burn them because it thinks your are starving it- and your body’s whole purpose is to keep you alive. Eating to little lowers your metabolism, so even if you are kicking ass in the gym, you won’t burn much, if at all. To truly figure out how many calories you need for your body type, and activity level, see this post. You’d be suprised how many people people need 2000 calories and up. (I need 2300 to maintain my weight and I weight 123.)

BODY TYPE: 154 isn’t an unhealthy weight, and shouldn’t be treated as such. If she can get through her workouts and is in good health, her weight isn’t holding her back from anything- she just doesn’t like how it looks. Some women are shaped differently than others, and even for 2 women that are the same height, one may be able to weight significantly less than the other without effort, and for the other it may not be a safe or realistic weight. Some women just need more fat. Fat is where estrogen is stored, so, as opposed to guys who can can have very low body fat and still be relatively healthy, we need a lot more to keep menstrating, etc. I know that doesn’t mean much to the person who is unhappy with their weight, but people are built differently, and have different shapes and happy weights.

ETC: Something medical may be going on (thyroid, metabolism issue, etc.) so if its a huge concern I would get some blood work done. If you are working out 5 days a week, there might be a possibility she is overtraining. When you push your body too hard for too long, it will rebel and shut down. You’ll still be able to get through your exercises, no problem, but your body just won’t respond to them to protect itself from getting burnt out. Sometimes you need to cut back, or cross train, which is something to talk to your trainer about.

Also, be careful how you talk to her about this. Even if she seems ok with you discussing her “extra fat” she may not be, and even if she is, discussing it at length like it is something wrong with her may make it seem like a bigger deal to her than it is.

Anyone else have any ideas?

Eating Disorder Related Deaths Don’t Discriminate

18 09 2009

I wrote an article for Twirlit.com a few days back about Samantha Clowe, a young woman desperate to lose weight for her wedding and to gain the respect of her coworkers. She did the LighterLife diet, which puts people on 530 calories per day for up to 12 weeks. Her 11th week on the diet, she died of heart failure.

You can read the whole story here.

The results were inconclusive as to wether or not the diet is actually to blame, but wether it was or not, I took the stance of not blaming the diet per se, because everyone is a free thinking individual, and should arm themselves with knowledge before plunging head first into something, especially a crash diet, even if you are desperate. I also pointed out that just because you are over weight doesn’t mean you can safely starve. You cannot live off of stored fat- its toxic.

Some blame the diet, some blame the girl, some blame society. More than anyone, I blame her doctor who was monitoring her and should have known better, and saw her rapid weight loss and knew of her diet- yet let her continue.

It brings up another point, however. You have a thin woman, say 120 pounds. Then you have a heavier woman, say 225 pounds. Both tell their seperate circles they are trying to lose weight, and are going to do it by consuming only 530 calories per day (on their own, no diet plan.) What would the respective reactions be?

The thin girl would be met with concerns, reassurances she doesn’t need to lose weight and that eating that little is starvation, borderline anorexic behavior.

The overweight girl would be met with congratulations for finally doing something about her weight, sticking to a plan, and having the self control to restrict to such a low number of calories.

Both are on the exact same “plan” yet since one doesn’t “need” to lose weight, and the other “does” (by society’s standard, at least) they get opposite reactions. The intake is just as dangerously low for each woman, but we think its “safer” for the over weight woman because she has fat to lose.

This is so wrong, and how people die.

There are SO MANY over weight girls with eating disorders, yet no one notices or voices concern. They are in just as much danger as those that are thin. In fact, most bulimics are normal to over weight simply because you can’t ever purge everything, and they binge so often that those remainder calories add up. Most people who die from eating disorders don’t die from starvation- they die from organ and heart failure due to electrolite imbalances. You don’t have to be painfully thin to be in danger.

I cringe everytime I hear someone tell an over weight person to “just stop eating.” Because what if they listen? A person’s weight is not an indicator of how in danger they are. Someone who is over weight’sr body needs just as much nutrition as anyone else’s and if it doesn’t recieve it, it will give out. If you see someone exhibiting eating disordered behaviors, don’t dismiss them because they are over weight. And if you are engaging in binging and purging or starvation, and feel that it isn’t a big deal because you aren’t stick thin, don’t fool yourself.

You could end up just like Samantha.

Love and Hate for The Biggest Loser

16 09 2009

Im sure most of you watched the season premier of The Biggest Loser last night. I was prepared to sit down and right my likes and dislikes of the show, but the negative column soon out weighed (ha, joke) the positive, so let me quickly say what I liked.

LIKES:

OMG Jillian has the most fantastic arms I have ever seen.
Probably from these. I dont want to risk growing testicles, so I think Ill settle for what my weights can give me.

That woman (forgive me, Im horrible with names) who lost her whole family in a car crash is the most inspirational person I have ever met. Anything any one has ever been through doesnt even come close to her tragedy- yet she is so sparkly, and sweet and motivational tidbits just spill out of her mouth every time she opens it. She seems like one of those people that you always want to be around because she sees the world differently than you ever could and learn from her everytime she’s around.

Coach Mo- I just want to pinch his cheeks.

Ok, that’s all. Seriously.

DISLIKES:

That first race? Where Tracy (think thats her name) collapsed about 100 yards before the finish line, and everyone rallied around her to help her cross it? She didn’t need to cross the finish line SHE NEEDED TO GO TO THE HOSPITAL. Who the hell was that medic that let that happen?? Her eyes were rolling back in her head, and she missed the first week because she was still in the hospital. I think the contestants got caught in being the supportive team for the cameras and almost killed this woman. Jesus Christ.

When Dan got out of the car to reveal himself, and everyone gasped and started screaming was such a crock. Do you really think those people immediately knew who he was? They are starting the most exciting journey of their lives on TV, about to start their race, hoping its Bob and Jillian that are getting out of the car, and some guy in a orange shirt comes out and they start screaming? No way. you know someone had to tell them who it was and then edit the time in between out.

Bob and Jillian, period. First, is it just me or do they get more ridiculously fashionable each season? Did you see them the first scene- it looked like they were dipped in leather. And what is with all the screaming and swearing?? The swearing especially. F-bombs constantly and completely unnecessary. Really had to step up your game to keep the ratings, huh guys?

I love the family-less woman (that sounded horrible- still not sure of her name) and when she weighed in, she went on an AWESOME speech about being your best and not letting things define you. Then fucking Jillian comes in and steals her thunder with a ton of “me, me me’s”. No body cares about you, Jillian, you are just there to make sure everyone sweats. Totally stole her thunder. it was worse than Kanye at the VMAs.

Yet, despite all my dislikes, I still watch the show every season, and still gripe about how it is 2 hours when really can be 30 minutes tops, and the infuriating way they cut to commercial each time. I like to see people work hard, lose weight and be happy. And I like to complain.

EGN Current Event Discussion

15 09 2009

I am currently sitting on my bed, rolling the arch of my foot over a rolling pin on the ground. Its actually working pretty well to alleviate the pain. I walked on the treadmill for an hour today and it started tightening up again on me towards to end, so I figured I should try and work out the kinks so I can get another run in.

I’m really enjoying it. Maybe because it hurts so much. I may be a sick individual.

I can’t explain it, and I don’t know want to jinx it, but hopefully it sticks around for a while. Im kind of infamous for getting jazzed about a new mode of exercise, and then losing steam in favor of something else. At least I don’t lose my interest in exercise all together.

Let’s discuss some current events, shall we?

Teri Hatcher Crosses Triathlon Off of Her Bucket List. This makes me feel as though I need a bucket list, but the only thing I can think of is to retire before I’m 60. Watch me die before I’m 60 now. What’s on yours?

Another Stupid Fitness Gadget hits the market. Im curious: if you hadn’t read my review of it first (assuming your read it) would you have bought into it?

Get Out of Bed and Literally Make more Time. This is full of tons of awesome tips, but since I get up at 3:45am for work anyway, I can’t use any of them so I thought I’d pass them along to you. Any more to add?

Serena Williams Flips Her Shit. Did you see this video? I just wrote this article about her kick ass muscle and then she threatens to use her muscles to kick some ass. I would have burst into tears if I was that woman. I get where the anger comes from, but holy cow, woman. I would had crapped myself if she came at me like that.

Jessica Simpson’s New Reality Show: Will it help or hurt? It sounds good in theory, but the whole premise of “the amazing lengths women will go to around the world to be beautiful” seems a little more about shock value and shallowness, than teaching us to accept ourselves.
