I’ve Got a Fever, and the Only Prescription, is More Kettlebell
16 07 2008I love kettlebells.
You could imagine how happy I was to come home and find a big ol’ heavy box on my doorstep from GoFit.net.
Inside was Sarah Lurie’s Kettlebells The Iron Core Way: a 15 pound kettlebell, and an accompanying DVD.

Kettlebells are great because they are all about functional movement. How often you find yourself actually needing to benchpress something? With functional training you train your body to, well, function properly. Its all about learning how to safely transfer momentum (the more weight, the more momentum) efficiently and safely through the body, like when you pick up your child or heft the groceries into the house. If your core is not strong and you cannot transfer this power, then you can pull a muscle or throw out your back.
i have a lot of back problems, and this is why I like kettlebells. It seems counterintuitive that slinging around a ball of iron would actually be good for your back, it helps to not only loosen it up, but also train it transfer those loads better.
I popped in the DVD expecting it to be a workout i could follow along to, but was suprised when it wasn’t. It was an instructional DVD to teach you basic and more advanced moves. Before each exercise, the key form points were spelled out for you while a woman (with a whole lot of I-could-kick-your-ass attitude) demonstrated. after that, you were invited to do a set along with her to get the hang of it. Although it was just to teach, by the end, my muscles were burning and i was dripping in sweat. Its the perfect DVD, especially for someone that has never done kettlebells before. It works as a guide to prepare you incase you want to take a class, or it works as a good routine if you just want to do it at home. There are more DVD’s available at GoFit.net along with different sized kettlebells (and a guide to help you pick the proper weight for you.)
Oh, and on the site they have a shirt that can spout your love for the wonder that are kettlebells.
And you know whats even better? GoFit.net sent me 2, so head over to GroundedFitness and read: GroundedFitness’s Badass Giveaway right now to enter to win your very own Kettlebells The Iron Core Way set.
(I told you it was good.)

Hells yes! You bet your sweet bottom I’ll be entering this one!
Best blog post title EVER.
I want that extra kettlebell…Gimme, gimme! I’ll continue my case over at Grounded Fitness now.
Oh I want I want! *Heading over to Grounded Fitness to figure out if I can sell my first born child for a pair of these or at least name it after one of you*
I got the Iron Core Kettlebell DVD or Download - Volume 1, and there is a routine after Sarah goes through all the different moves in an instructional manner. You repeat the sequence 3 times with some modifications.
Now, I am in pretty good shape (though in my 8th month of baby making) and the DVD, well… kicks my booty a little bit. I love it. I am going to keep with it for now, but once I have baby, I will be kicking it up, because kettlebells are a super way to train. It works you in such a different way than isolating on muscle and doing flexion extension till you’re blue.
I heart kettlebells.
omg you can do kettlebells with your back prob? I’m SO asking my physical therapist about this today. I want to play!!!
ModelBehavior- you better. make it a good one!

weightinggame- they help me a lot. the loosening is the biggest part. i just start out with small swings to get it moving a little bit, and work my way up to bigger ones and then im good to go for a whole routine. definately ask first- i think all your readers would kill me if you hurt yourself again

I benchpress small cars and annoying children all the time. Who doesn’t???
P.S.
I did 17 pull-ups. Not 20 - but close!
I used to walk really slow and gossip with my neighbor for exercise. But once I was able to pull a biting dog off her leg and then had the bad-assedness to kick it as it ran away. Sorry no photos, lol. Just found your site today, love it!
ooh! I’ve heard about these things - they had a featured kettleball workout in SELF (or maybe it was Shape.. one of ‘em) a while back, and they were also raved about on some “Get A Hollywood Body” tv special.
and I liked what you said about training for “functional” movement. makes perfect sense!
oops, I mean the kettleBELL! how am I going to attempt entering the contest if I can’t even spell it right?! lol
I just heard about the existence of Kettleballs recently and I’ve wanted to get my hands on one ever since. They seem like they would be an amazing workout.
You pretty much rock for holding a contest that gives one away. If only I were a badass. I need to work on my badass skills first.
I would love to get my hands on one or a dozen, but the dern things are so expensive.
Who knew Kelly could come with such malicious nick names. I always thought Kelly…equals Kelly Kapowski …equals hot. Weird named Fitzalan was jealous!!!
Wow, I got a Saved by the Bell reference in there.
Sagan- enter the giveaway! its the perfect way to start out cause you can do it at home with no investment and the DVd teaches you the fundamentals.

Kristie- stop taking me so seriously guys, its more of a creativity contest. the funnier the pictures the more likely you are to win!
Fitzalan- wait, your real name is Fitzalan? thats so cool. and where were you when i was in school? oh, the best one (my last name is turner) “turner in, turner out, turn her into sourkraut.” i had to give them props cause its pretty clever for elementary school.
Ahh good old Christopher Walken. Best sketch EVER

Haha, awesome post title! [and I totally relate - love kettlebells!!]
“more Kettlebell” HAHAHA
I want kettlebell!
Hey Kelly, I have a question for ya. I have only been running for about 4-5 months now, but lately when I run i get pretty nauseous towards the end. This never used to happen before, I didn’t rapidly increase my run or anything, in fact I haven’t increased in a while because of the nausia (spl?) I always have a small snack before I go. Any suggestions or ideas? It’s pretty unpleasent and is making me not want to run
ModelBehavior- i almost didnt answer your question because i didnt want to have to worry about spelling nausea right (i dont even know if thats right)
I dont run very much because i get cramps from it. and if its kind of cold out, i get a really bad ear ache. its weird. anyway, everyone is different and you kind of have to experiment. some people bget nauseous when they dont eat, some if they do, some if they drink water, some if they dont, depends on how soon you ate before you started running etc. etc. most of the time its due to eating something too heavy, though. i dont know what you usually eat, but id say its either too much or too little, or just wait a little bit longer until you start running after you eat.
